What European bike cover includes
The same core as car cover: English-speaking assistance, roadside help, towing to a garage, accommodation while the bike is repaired, and repatriation of bike and rider if it cannot be fixed in time. For riders the accommodation benefit matters more, because you cannot sleep in a bike, and the repatriation benefit matters more, because leaving a bike abroad and flying back later is rarely practical.
Group tours
If you tour with friends, each rider needs their own cover, or one rider's personal policy may extend to pillions only. Consider whether the policy will help the rest of the group continue: some pay for a hire vehicle, which is no use to a rider.
Country-specific kit
France requires a hi-vis vest; Spain and Italy require them in some circumstances; several countries require a first-aid kit. Many require headlamp use at all times. Check the requirements for every country on the route, not just the destination.
Providers that cover bikes abroad
The AA, RAC and Green Flag all offer European cover on their motorcycle products. Several budget online brands do not cover bikes at all. Compare on the motorbike cover page and check the territorial list against your route.
Before you go
- Service the bike and fit new tyres if they are close to the limit.
- Carry a puncture repair kit and a basic tool roll.
- Write the assistance number on something waterproof.
- Check your motor insurance covers the countries on your route.
