Why UK cover stops at the port
UK breakdown cover buys you a network of UK-based operators. Abroad, your provider has to pay a foreign garage or recovery firm at local rates and then organise getting a car back across a border and a sea. That is a different, more expensive service, which is why it is sold separately.
What you get
An English-speaking helpline, roadside assistance and towing abroad, a contribution to garage labour, emergency accommodation or car hire while the car is fixed, and — the expensive bit — repatriation of the car and its occupants to the UK if it cannot be repaired within a set period. Many policies add a replacement driver, spare-parts shipping and cover for the UK leg to the port.
What it does not cover
- Parts and most repair costs.
- Breakdowns in countries outside the policy's territorial list.
- Vehicles over the age, weight or value limits.
- Accidents (that is your car insurer, so check your motor policy covers Europe).
- Medical treatment and travel insurance matters.
Do you need it for one short trip?
A breakdown on a day trip to Calais still means a French recovery operator, a French garage and possibly a ferry for a car on a trailer. Single-trip cover for a few days costs little; the risk it removes is large. If you make more than one trip a year, annual cover is cheaper still.
Buying it
Compare on the European cover page. Look at the territorial limits, the vehicle age cap, the repatriation limit and whether the policy starts at your front door or at the port.
