Green Flag breakdown cover

Green Flag was founded in Bradford in 1971 as the National Breakdown Recovery Club, deliberately set up as a cheaper alternative to the AA and RAC by using local garages rather than a patrol fleet. It is now part of Direct Line Group and still works the same way.

How Green Flag cover is structured

Green Flag's tiers are Rescue (roadside), Rescue Plus (roadside plus home), Recovery (adds national recovery) and Recovery Plus (adds onward travel). Cover is available for a vehicle or a person, with options for couples and families. European cover can be added as single-trip or annual.

What stands out

  • Price. Consistently among the cheapest of the big names for like-for-like cover, and the renewal pricing has historically been less aggressive than the patrol operators.
  • Contractor network. The operator who attends is a local recovery firm. In practice this often means the nearest truck, and the attendance times Green Flag publishes are comparable to the patrol operators.
  • Motorbikes and EVs are covered on standard terms.
  • Direct Line Group backing, which makes it a natural bundle with Direct Line, Churchill and Privilege car insurance.

Where it falls down

Service quality depends on the local contractor, so experiences vary by area. There is no branded patrol, which some drivers mind and most do not. Call-out limits apply on cheaper tiers, and some older vehicles are excluded.

Who it suits

Value-conscious drivers who want a well-known brand without paying for a patrol fleet. A strong default choice for one-car households and for anyone buying at the Rescue or Recovery level. Also see Green Flag European cover and Green Flag motorbike cover.
