The AA – Driving School

BreakdownChoices is an affiliate of The AA. Not only known as the UK’s biggest breakdown organisation; The AA (www.theaa.com) is also known for its driving school. Learning to drive can be stressful for both the learner and for their family, but the AA uses dual-control Ford Focus cars to teach learners, and learners are guaranteed to have a fully qualified instructor.

The Driving Standards Agency estimates that the average learner needs 45 hours of tuition plus around 22 hours of private practice to pass their test. Lessons have become increasingly expensive but as tempting as it can be to go for the cheapest option available, many people prefer to pay a little extra and go for a trusted name.

What you should know

  • Once you’ve passed your test, the AA offer a short six-part “Pass Plus” course which allows new drivers to get experience in towns, all-weathers, out of town and rural roads, night driving, dual carriageway and motorways, building up their confidence.
  • Once you have your Pass Plus certificate you will get a discount on your insurance premium – which can be very expensive for new drivers. Many companies also offer a higher no-claims bonus.
  • The AA offers up to 35 per cent off their insurance for drivers who completed the Pass Plus with the AA driving school.
  • Learning with the AA will entitle you to discounts on some of their products once you pass your test including up to £100 off their car insurance, 25 per cent discount on their breakdown cover and discounts on their travel insurance and road atlases.

Anything else?

You can practice your theory test and get tips on the hazard perception part on the AA website as well as learning all about the “show and tell” part of the practical.

They also have their “AAtitude” site which is dedicated to new drivers.

They do cost more than independent instructors and smaller schools though, so be aware that you’ll be paying extra to learn with the AA – the average AA lesson costs £22 for an hour.
