The AA – Breakdown Cover
BreakdownChoices is an affiliate of The AA. As the UK’s biggest breakdown organisation, The AA (www.theaa.com) offers cover to suit different needs and budgets. They are a known and trusted name arriving on average 40 minutes after your call.
As well as their four levels of cover they also offer add-ons such as a premium to help with the cost of repairs and replacement batteries, starter motors and radiators.

They also offer discounts for signing up online. You buy their basic Roadside (Option 100) cover for £33.60 online and then add on your extras, choosing from:
- Relay (Option 200) – If they cannot get you back on the road within a reasonable time they will transport you to any UK destination.
- Home Start (Option 300) – Without this you’re only covered if you’re further than ¼ mile from your home. If you purchase Home Start the AA will provide assistance at your home too.
- Relay Plus (Option 400) – This option is only available if you already have Relay and offers you a choice of options for your onward journey; a hire car for 48 hours, overnight accommodation or travel expenses to complete your journey.

What you should know
Reading the terms and conditions is tedious but essential (to read in full visit The AA; you need to know what is and isn’t covered.
- The AA doesn’t provide recovery following an accident.
- If your breakdown has been attended by the police who insist on recovery by a third party, you must meet the cost yourself.
- You’re not covered for the cost of any routine maintenance or running repairs. Spare parts, petrol, oil, keys etc must also be met by you.
- Service is discretionary if you have already called the AA out for the same problem within the previous 28 days.
- Transport of any animal is discretionary, and horses and livestock will not be recovered.
Anything else?
It might sound obvious, but before you take out breakdown cover, check that you don’t already have it. Many new cars come with a year’s free cover and some insurance includes breakdown cover in the policy so make sure you don’t end up paying for the same thing twice.
Also, think about the condition of your car. While breakdown services are not designed to be used for routing maintenance, if you have an older car you’re probably more likely to need it.
However, you shouldn’t just take out the most expensive cover thinking that it will provide the best service for you as you’ll probably just be wasting money. For example, if you only ever drive in your own town, you don’t need a policy covering European travel and overnight accommodation.
