Motorists Confused by Basic Tasks
(26-06-07) - New research shows that nine million motorists get confused when it comes to basic car maintenance according to new research.
2.5 million of the UK’s 33 million drivers wouldn’t know where to find the spare tyre in their car, while almost half of drivers wouldn’t know how to fit it if they did find it.
The survey, from breakdown provider Green Flag, showed that a worrying number of people were unsure of how to do tasks as simple as opening the bonnet, fill up the windscreen washers or how to check tyre pressure.
Green Flag said that one of the most common reasons for callouts was because the car had run out of fuel. Philippa Naylor, spokeswoman for Green Flag said: “The research clearly shows that many of us have scant knowledge about our cars despite relying on them to go about our everyday lives.
“Just by brushing up on some basic car maintenance knowledge, drivers could identify some simple problems before the frustration kicks in and they need to call us out for expert help.”
Chris Eagle, commercial manager at BreakdownChoices.co.uk added: “Having breakdown cover is a good idea because you never know when you’ll have a real emergency; however, knowing how to find the spark plugs could save you loads of time hanging around motorway verges.”
