Bank holiday to be “worst ever” for congestion, warns RAC
(05-05-07) - The RAC breakdown company has warned that this May Day bank holiday could see unprecedented congestion, after a survey revealed that motorists plan to drive 1.8 billion miles more than last year: the equivalent of driving to the moon and back four thousand times! (visit www.rac.co.uk)
RAC and Trafficmaster have warned that traffic will reach its peak between 3pm and 7pm on Friday May 4th, with family holidays and romantic break clashing with the usual Friday afternoon rush hour. Traffic will also increase by 150% on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.
Congestion is likely to be significantly worse at the following ‘hotspots’:
M25 (especially western, northern and eastern sectors)
M1 (especially through Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire)
M6 (especially Birmingham and the M6 Toll)
Coastal routes, including the A12, M3, A21, A23, A3, M5 and A55
Areas around key events, including Newmarket race meetings on Saturday and Sunday, motor racing and motorbike events at Silverstone and Oulton Park on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and the eight Premiership matches being played on Saturday.
At www.breakdownchoices.co.uk, we recommend setting off early, avoiding the hotspots above if possible, and remembering to pack your breakdown policy details and enough water to keep you and your family hydrated if you’re stuck in the hot weather. And above all, have a great bank holiday break!
