Winter breakdown cover

Dear Chris,

I’m scared about driving during the coming winter weather because I only recently passed my driving test. What can I do to make sure that my car and I are ready for any icy and snowy roads this winter?

Gemma, via email on 18November 2010

Driving during winter is always dangerous because darker conditions, black ice, snow and even heavy rain can all make controlling the car more difficult.

You should always have breakdown cover to act as your safety net in the event of a winter breakdown, but other simple steps can also help reduce your chances of a vehicle breakdown this Christmas.

Roadside winter breakdown cover for cars and motorcycles

Imagine your car breaking down on a dark country road while the snow is falling all around you.

The predicament is enough to worry any driver, and according to figures from breakdown provider RAC, over 6,000 motorists without breakdown cover contacted the company for help last winter.

So if you don’t already have some form of vehicle breakdown cover, it’s vital that you prepare for winter’s extreme driving conditions by comparing car breakdown deals.

If you already have some form of roadside breakdown insurance - such as multi-vehicle breakdown cover or driver-based breakdown cover - be sure to check that the policy is still valid - particularly before setting out on a long journey.

Motorcyclists should also think about taking out specialist motorcycle breakdown insurance this winter. Read more about the various types of motorbike breakdown cover.

Your car could breakdown at home

Car breakdowns don’t only happen on the roadside during the winter months.

Some 50% of RAC members suffered a vehicle breakdown at home during December 2009 and January this year, with the breakdown company receiving over one million calls about vehicle breakdowns during the two winter months.

RAC offers free “at home protection” for all new members who buy its personal roadside and recovery cover, which the company said could save you up to £34.

Other providers, such as Green Flag and Britannia, also offer Home Start breakdown deals.

Essential car maintenance

To reduce the risk of your car breaking down this winter - whether at home or by the roadside - always be sure to:

  • Check your car’s tyre pressure and tread depth. Also check that the spare tyre’s in good condition
  • Test that the headlights and brakelights are working
  • Check the front and rear wiper blades for wear and tear
  • Use special screen wash with antifreeze in it because it doesn’t freeze.
