Dear Chris,
I have a relative visiting from abroad for about a month. Can you suggest a way of getting temporary breakdown cover for them so that they can drive our car?
Gary, via email on 16 December 2010
Breakdown providers are aware of situations such as this and have designed specific breakdown deals and packages to help.
As in your case, a visiting relative needs their own transportation for a short while. Other people may want someone else to drive as they’re feeling tired or poorly.
What’s known as “vehicle-based breakdown cover” will protect both you and your visiting relative in the event of a car breakdown.
Vehicle-based breakdown cover, as the name suggests, is merely concerned with the car that has broken down - not the person actually driving it.
Read more about vehicle-based breakdown packages and costs.
Your existing breakdown provider - if you have one - will normally add a second driver to your deal for a small one-off fee.
The cost of temporary breakdown cover varies between providers, with factors including how long you’ve been a customer, your vehicle’s age and the age of the short-term driver all affecting how much how the temporary cover costs.
