Dear Chris, Could driving over potholes raise the risk of my car breaking down?

Potholes are an increasing problem on British roads, and recent surveys hint at an increase in the number of motorists breaking down because of vehicle problems caused by potholes.
The good news is that the majority of breakdown packages will cover you in some form if your car breaks down because of a mechanical problem caused by driving over a pothole.

The bad news is that many UK councils are concerned that the government’s ongoing budget cuts may mean they can’t afford to fix existing potholes.
£9.5bn is needed to “bring the roads up to scratch” in England and Wales, according to Adrian Tink - a motoring strategist at RAC breakdown.
But only 20% of the 20 local councils recently quizzed by the RAC expect to repair potholes in their local roads before the onset of winter.
