Dear Chris, I drive two different cars and want breakdown cover that will protect me whichever one I’m in. What are my options?

Breakdown insurers have designed various types of breakdown cover to guarantee you’re always covered whatever car you’re in.
Known as multi-vehicle cover, it will mean a qualified mechanic will come to your aid whether you’re in one of your own cars or anyone else’s.
You have two main options when looking to cover yourself against a roadside breakdown while driving one of several possible cars:
Vehicle-based breakdown cover, as the name suggests, is only interested in the car that has broken down - not the person driving it.
Several breakdown insurers, including Green Flag, cover your car as standard. You will be asked to nominate a main vehicle, usually your everyday hatchback or saloon, which will be used to calculate the standard breakdown cover cost.
To this you can then add personal breakdown cover that, for an annual fee, extends the breakdown cover out to you while driving other cars.
Driver-based breakdown cover is focused on the person driving the car, rather than the car, and is the type favoured by the AA.
This cover gives you the freedom to drive any number of cars and usually provides you with breakdown cover even when you’re travelling as a passenger.
Driver-based breakdown also often allows breakdown cover to be extended out to other people, such as family members. This makes driver-based breakdown cover a great option for parents with children that travel to school in car-pools because it means the kids are protected against breakdowns whatever car they’re in.
It’s important to read the smallprint when you compare multi-vehicle breakdown cover options because each insurer will apply different stipulations to the policy. These may include:
