Do I need breakdown insurance?

Dear Chris, I know that it’s illegal to drive a car in the UK without insurance, but is it illegal to drive a car on UK roads without breakdown insurance?

Our breakdown expert says…

Currently breakdown insurance is optional for UK drivers, unlike car insurance.

The government is however currently considering whether to make breakdown insurance a legal requirement.

If this happens then it’s unclear quite what impact compulsory breakdown cover will have on annual breakdown fees, but the British Insurance Brokers Association has said that the change has the potential to level the playing field for all motorists, creating a fairer system.

The benefits of breakdown insurance

Comparing breakdown insurance now could be the key to beating the rush and to securing a better deal.

The government may be making breakdown insurance compulsory

When considering annual breakdown cover you should always consider:

  • The type of insurance you need - Driver-based breakdown cover is the most suitable choice if you often drive different cars, while vehicle-based breakdown cover will ensure anyone driving your car is covered in the event of a breakdown.
  • Your car’s condition - Older cars with lots of miles on the clock tend to attract higher breakdown premiums, especially if you opt for vehicle-based cover.
  • Variables - Breakdown providers offer several types of cover, everything from basic roadside assistance to home recovery and all-inclusive parts. But the more variables you add to your package the more it’ll cost.

To discover the cheapest breakdown cover packages , it’s always best to compare deals online.
