Dear Chris,
I frequently drive around the UK to visit my clients and, should my car ever break down, can’t afford to be waiting hours for the recovery vehicle. What’s the average breakdown recovery time and do most providers fix cars by the side of the road?
Greg, via email on 7 March 2011
Time is of the essence for you, so I’d advise you to get a breakdown deal from one the UK’s biggest breakdown providers - the AA, Green Flag and the RAC - because they have the most recovery vehicles and mechanics.
Variables including the weather, your breakdown location and the number of breakdown calls received on the same day make it difficult for providers to guarantee that they’ll always reach you within a specific time.
However, the UK’s three largest providers offer the following average breakdown response times:
Smaller breakdown providers, such as ASDA Breakdown and Tesco Breakdown, contract breakdown services out to the larger providers, such as Green Flag, so it’s still worth comparing breakdown deals with smaller providers because you could get a cheaper deal.
The cause of your car’s breakdown will obviously affect how long it takes your provider’s mechanic to fix the vehicle.
The UK’s three largest breakdown providers each offer the following roadside recover statistics:
| Company | Package Name | From | Roadside repair | Online Discount | Tow to nearest garage |
