I am looking for breakdown cover which will cover both my husband and me driving either of our two cars. Does this exist or is it cheaper to get our own separate cover?
Rochelle Marsden, via email.
Hi there Rochelle,
Yes, the cover you’re seeking does exist, although I can understand why your search to find it was inconclusive. That’s because a casual glance at the major breakdown companies’ websites fails to shed light on what is, I assume, a fairly common question.
Three factors play a crucial role in determining a second-hand car’s likelihood of breaking down:
With so many different providers and packages available, the key question to ask the provider of the cover is: does the insurance cover the vehicle or the person? Not all providers offer both options so this is a good way to start narrowing your search.
Vehicle-based cover is often a cheaper option, as it entitles you to breakdown assistance for a specific car regardless of who is driving. If you only ever travel in your own car or share a car with a partner, this can be an economical option.
Personal-based cover provides breakdown recovery protection, regardless of which car you’re in. A policy of this type will be valid whether you’re travelling as a driver or passenger and in your own or someone else’s car. Because of its flexibility this type of cover is likely to be more expensive than vehicle-based cover. However, if you often drive more than one car or frequently travel with others, it’s probably worth paying the extra.
The bigger breakdown companies, such as the AA, RAC and Green Flag, let you choose vehicle or personal (the latter will be more expensive than the former) cover, and personal membership can be extended to an extra person living at the same address. Covering two people in a joint policy is much cheaper than taking out two separate single memberships. That way, regardless of how many cars you have, you and your husband will always have cover.
One more option for personal breakdown cover is family membership, which extends to protect two adults and two children and again saves a lot of money compared to taking out four single policies. However, to qualify for family membership, everybody on the breakdown policy must be a resident at the same address.
