Breakdown cover age limits

Dear Chris,

I’m having difficulty trying to find out if any of the major breakdown providers put an age limit on the owner of a car requiring breakdown cover.

Our breakdown expert says…

Car breakdowns can happen to anyone, so it’s vital that have reliable and competitively priced breakdown cover - whatever your age is.

Thankfully most major breakdown providers won’t take your age into account when calculating a cover quote, but there are several other factors that they could consider which may impact your ability to get cheap breakdown cover.

Age-related breakdown cover

The majority of breakdown providers will offer cover to any driver, irrespective of their age, provided they hold a valid UK driving licence.

However, a few minor caveats often apply to this rule:

  • When applying for vehicle-based breakdown insurance, the age of your car could impact your ability to get cover. The AA, for example, told me that it won’t provide vehicle-based breakdown insurance if your car is more than 10 years old
  • The cost of personal breakdown cover - rather than vehicle-based - could be effected by the driver’s age, with the youngest and oldest drivers more likely to pay a premium.
  • Some breakdown providers can’t offer breakdown cover to anyone older than 99 years, simply because their computer systems can’t handle more than three age digits.
